About This Product

BD's Screamer line of turbos offer drop-in, stock-appearing units that add an additional punch in power without major modifications to intake or exhaust systems. The L5P Screamer for 2017- 2023 Duramax engines feature custom compressor and turbine wheels that have been designed to give you increased airflow without compromising on low end performance. Manufactured using OEM housings, the L5P Screamer turbo is machined to accept the new larger 66.2mm compressor and 67mm turbine wheels which will allow for better airflow (up to 80 lb/min) and lower exhaust gas temperatures. With supporting modifications, the L5P Screamer can achieve up to 680hp.

Is this a direct, drop-in replacement for my stock L5P turbo?

Yes, the BD Screamer Turbo is designed as a direct, stock-appearing replacement for the factory turbo on 2017-2023 GM 6.6L L5P Duramax trucks. It utilizes a machined OEM housing to ensure all factory connections align perfectly without modification. — The Screamer turbo (part 1045844) starts as a genuine OEM Garrett turbocharger, which is then disassembled and precision CNC-machined to accept larger internal components. This process guarantees that all mounting points, oil and coolant line fittings, and connections for the intake and exhaust are identical to the factory unit you are removing. This bolt-in design significantly simplifies installation, as no custom fabrication or adapter flanges are needed. While it is a direct physical fit, custom ECU tuning is mandatory to take advantage of the increased airflow and ensure proper engine operation.

What kind of power increase can I realistically expect?

This Screamer turbo can support up to 680 horsepower, but this figure requires significant supporting modifications. The turbo itself provides the necessary airflow, rated at up to 80 lb/min, for substantial power gains over the stock unit. — The key to unlocking the full potential of the Screamer turbo lies in your fueling and tuning. The stock L5P fuel system is insufficient for 680hp, so you will need upgrades such as a high-flow lift pump and potentially a modified injection pump or larger injectors. Most importantly, custom ECU tuning is not optional; it's required to recalibrate the engine's fuel maps and boost profiles to match the turbo's increased airflow. Without tuning and fuel system upgrades, you will not see the maximum advertised power gains.

What are the specific internal upgrades in the Screamer vs. the stock turbo?

The core upgrades are a significantly larger compressor wheel and a higher-flowing turbine wheel. These custom components are specifically designed to increase airflow beyond the factory turbo's capacity. — Inside the machined OEM housing, the Screamer features two key performance components: — • A custom 66.2mm billet forged milled compressor wheel, which is larger and more efficient than the stock cast wheel. • A custom 67mm high-flow turbine wheel, designed to reduce backpressure and allow exhaust gases to escape more freely. These two components work together to increase maximum airflow by up to 33% over stock, enabling the turbo to produce up to 80 lb/min. This increased efficiency is what allows the engine to make more power while also helping to control exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs).

Do I absolutely need custom tuning to run this turbo?

Yes, custom ECU tuning is mandatory for the safe and effective operation of the Screamer turbo. Installing it on a truck with a stock engine calibration will result in poor performance, check engine lights, and potential engine damage. — The factory ECU is programmed for the precise airflow characteristics of the stock turbocharger. The Screamer's larger 66.2mm compressor and 67mm turbine wheels move a much greater volume of air (up to 80 lb/min), which the stock tune cannot properly manage. Custom tuning is required to adjust fuel delivery, injection timing, and boost pressure to match this increased airflow. Failing to tune the vehicle can lead to dangerous air-fuel ratios, compressor surge, and limp mode, and you will not realize any of the turbo's performance benefits.

Will this turbo help lower my EGTs when towing?

Yes, the Screamer turbo can help lower and manage exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs), especially when towing heavy loads. Its design increases overall airflow efficiency, allowing the engine to run cooler under sustained load. — The improved EGT control comes from the turbo's upgraded components. The larger 66.2mm compressor wheel moves more air into the engine with less effort, creating a denser, cooler charge. Simultaneously, the 67mm high-flow turbine wheel allows exhaust gases to exit the cylinders more easily, reducing exhaust backpressure. This improved efficiency means your engine can produce the same amount of power with less strain, which directly translates to lower EGTs compared to the stock turbo, providing a wider margin of safety on long grades.

What other "supporting modifications" are needed to reach 680hp?

To achieve the 680hp potential of this turbo, you will need to upgrade the L5P's fuel system and likely strengthen the transmission. The turbo provides the air, but the stock fuel and driveline components become limiting factors at that power level. — Key supporting modifications typically include: — • Fuel System: A high-flow lift pump is the first step to prevent fuel starvation. To go further, a stroker CP4 injection pump or a dual-pump kit and larger injectors are necessary to supply enough fuel to match the turbo's 80 lb/min airflow. • Custom Tuning: A custom ECU tune is essential to orchestrate the fuel and air delivery for the higher power target. • Transmission: The stock Allison 10-speed transmission is robust, but the torque produced at 680hp can exceed its limits. A built transmission with upgraded clutch packs and a re-calibrated valve body is highly recommended for reliability.
