WHY TURBOCHARGERS FAIL AND HOW BD SOLVES IT

The Holset HE351VE variable-geometry turbo (VGT) on the 2007.5-2012 6.7L Cummins is known for providing great response and acting as the truck's exhaust brake. However, its complexity can lead to issues, most commonly with the electronic actuator or sticking internal vanes due to soot buildup. For a straightforward fix, we offer brand new replacement actuators, as well as complete, remanufactured stock replacement turbos that are a direct bolt-in solution to get your truck back on the road.

  • Loss of Power / Poor Response

Often caused by a sticking VGT mechanism or a failing actuator, preventing the turbo from building boost correctly.

    The BD Difference

A new replacement actuator or remanufactured stock turbo restores correct boost across the RPM range.

  • Exhaust Brake Malfunction

The VGT system also functions as the exhaust brake, so a poorly engaging brake often traces back to the turbo.

    The BD Difference

A failing actuator or soot-clogged VGT nozzle ring is the usual culprit; a new actuator often solves it.

  • Turbo-Related Fault Codes

Codes like P2262 (Turbocharger Boost Pressure Not Detected) or P0046 point directly to issues with the VGT actuator or wiring.

    The BD Difference

Diagnosing the actuator, wiring, or internal turbo mechanisms is the first step to resolving these codes.

  • Screeching or Whining Noises

Can indicate bearing failure within the turbo's rotating assembly, often caused by oil contamination or starvation.

    The BD Difference

This condition requires a full turbo replacement rather than a simple repair.

What's the difference between a stock HE351 and a Screamer HE351?

The Screamer HE351 uses the same housing for a drop-in fit but features a larger, more efficient compressor wheel for increased airflow and power potential compared to the stock unit.

My exhaust brake isn't working. Could it be the turbo?

Yes. The HE351VE variable geometry turbo (VGT) also functions as the exhaust brake. A failing electronic actuator or soot-clogged VGT vanes are common causes of exhaust brake malfunction.

Do I need a whole new turbo or just a VGT actuator?

If the turbo's rotating assembly is in good condition, with no excessive shaft play or damaged wheels, and the issue is electronic, you can often solve the problem by just replacing the VGT actuator.

What is an Iron Horn kit?

An Iron Horn kit is a performance upgrade that converts your truck from the stock VGT turbo to a more reliable and higher-flowing fixed-geometry BorgWarner S300 or S400 series turbo, which requires custom tuning.

Do your remanufactured turbos come with an actuator?

Our BD stock replacement and Screamer turbos for this application include a new, pre-calibrated VGT actuator. Actuators are also sold separately, so check the product description to confirm what is included.

Are these turbos legal in California?

Emissions legality varies by product. Many performance turbos are not for sale or use in California. Always check the emissions status on the specific product page to ensure compliance for your vehicle and state.
