The LMM is loved for towing manners and Allison compatibility, but it’s also the era where emissions hardware and regen heat start shaping ownership. The key is knowing what’s “normal behavior” versus early warning signs you can fix before they get expensive.

Short trips and heavy idle time raise soot load. Fix: verify sensors, drive cycle to complete regens, address exhaust leaks that confuse readings.
EGR systems can contribute to soot load and drivability complaints. Fix: diagnose with scan data; clean/repair components as needed.
VGT mechanisms hate soot + heat. Fix: verify commanded vs actual vane positions; address upstream exhaust leaks and aftertreatment restriction.
Low boost + smoke often equals leak. Fix: smoke test the CAC system. Repair leaks before replacing the turbo.
Rough idle, haze, economy drop—don’t guess. Fix: balance rates + return test. Replace only what’s proven.
Hard start and stumble can be air intrusion. Fix: inspect seals, primer behavior, and line connections.
Towing exposes marginal cooling. Fix: pressure test, verify fan/clutch operation (where applicable), clean stack, fix leaks early.
Soot tracks and tick under load steal energy. Fix: repair leaks, then re-evaluate turbo behavior.
Hunting/lockup slip creates heat. Fix: service fluid based on heat/load, verify latest strategy, and control temps for towing.
Cold weather reveals weak batteries and heater issues. Fix: load-test batteries, verify glow system current draw, use proper oil viscosity.
Note: Always follow OEM procedures and local emissions requirements.
