About This Product

The 2011-2016 Ford 3.5L has an inherent design flaw where not all of the OE stud locations are utilized by the OE manufacturer which leads to warped exhaust manifolds, broken exhaust studs and blown manifold gaskets. The cylinder head on Fords 3.5L Gas Ecoboost has threaded holes for 11 exhaust studs to be used, however the OE manifold only utilizes 8 of those stud locations. BD has designed a manifold that not only utilizes all 11 stud locations, but also improves exhaust flow and has improved durability, the way it should have come from the factory. BD's Ford 3.5L exhaust manifolds are made from thicker-walled high silicone ductile iron designed to resist thermal warping. Each kit includes 22 exhaust spacers and 22 class 8.8 studs designed to further improve thermal durability.

Exhaust Manifold Kit Ford F150 3.5L ECOBOOST 2011-2016 / TRANSIT 2015-2024

How does this manifold kit fix the factory exhaust leak problem on the 3.5L EcoBoost?

This kit uses all 11 stud locations on the cylinder head, unlike the factory manifold which only uses 8. This provides superior clamping force to prevent warping and gasket blowouts. The manifold itself is also made from a much stronger, warp-resistant material. — The original Ford design for the 3.5L EcoBoost engine leaves three M8 stud holes unused on each cylinder head, leading to an uneven clamping force that causes the thin factory manifold to warp when subjected to heat cycles. This warping leads to exhaust leaks and eventualy broken studs. The BD Diesel manifold kit (part #1043001) corrects this flaw by featuring a thick, rigid flange that utilizes all 11 available stud locations, distributing the clamping load evenly. This, combined with the manifold's construction from thick-walled high-silicone ductile iron, ensures it stays flat and maintains a positive seal for the life of the engine.

What specifically comes in the 1043001 manifold kit?

The kit includes two high-silicone ductile iron exhaust manifolds and all the specialty hardware required for installation. This includes longer studs, spacers, nuts, and a stud installation tool. Gaskets are not included. — Inside the box, you will find a complete hardware solution designed to replace the failure-prone factory components. The foundation is the pair of heavy-duty, port-matched BD manifolds. The full parts list is as follows: — • 2x High-Silicone Ductile Iron Exhaust Manifolds • 22x Class 8.8 M8 Exhaust Studs (15mm longer than stock) • 22x Steel Exhaust Spacers • 22x New flange nuts • 1x M8 Stud installation tool Note that gaskets are not included. For a complete installation, BD suggests the optional Addition Parts Kit (part #1043002) which would typically include the necessary gaskets.

Will these manifolds increase my truck's performance?

Yes, these manifolds are designed to improve exhaust flow and promote quicker turbo spool-up. The ports are internally matched to the cylinder head's exhaust port for a smoother, less restrictive flow path. — While the primary goal of this kit is to provide a permanent fix for leaking and cracking, performance is a key secondary benefit. The factory manifolds are not optimized for performance, whereas the BD Diesel manifolds are port-matched to the cylinder head exhaust outlet. This creates a smoother, less turbulent path for exhaust gases traveling to the turbocharger. This design reduces backpressure and increases exhaust gas velocity, allowing the turbocharger to spool up more quickly for a noticeable improvement in throttle response and efficiency, especially when towing or under heavy acceleration.

What is the purpose of the longer studs and spacers in this kit?

The longer studs and matching spacers are a critical part of the design that improves thermal durability. This system allows the manifold to expand and contract during heat cycles without putting excessive stress on the studs, which prevents them from breaking. — The factory setup with short studs holds the manifold rigidly against the aluminum cylinder head. As the heavy iron manifold heats up much more than the head, it tries to expand but cannot, putting immense tensile stress on the factory studs, which causes them to fatigue, stretch, and break. The BD Diesel kit's robust solution uses 22 Class 8.8 studs that are 15mm longer than stock, along with 22 matching spacers. This allows the thick-walled manifold to "float" slightly, safely accommodating thermal expansion and contraction without over-stressing the mounting hardware.

What tools are needed for installation and what is that optional parts kit?

An M8 stud installation tool is included in the kit to help properly seat the new, longer studs into the cylinder head. Beyond that, standard professional mechanic's hand tools are required. The optional kit (part #1043002) is suggested to make the install easier as it typically contains gaskets and other small hardware not in the main kit. — Installing these manifolds requires working in the tight confines of the engine bay and frequently involves dealing with rusted or broken factory hardware. A quality socket set, extensions, wrenches, and a torque wrench are essential. Given the common problem of broken factory studs, a stud extractor kit is highly recommended to have on hand. The optional BD Addition Parts Kit (1043002) is recommended because the main 1043001 kit does not include exhaust manifold or turbocharger gaskets, which must be replaced for a proper, leak-free installation.

Why do the factory Ford 3.5L EcoBoost exhaust manifolds fail?

The factory 2011-2016 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost exhaust manifolds are known to develop warped manifolds, broken exhaust studs, and leaking manifold gaskets. One of the primary causes is that the OE design does not utilize all available exhaust stud locations, allowing the manifold to move during repeated heat cycles. The BD Diesel manifold kit uses all 11 stud locations to improve clamping force and reduce the likelihood of future failures.

What symptoms indicate I need new exhaust manifolds?

Common symptoms include ticking noise during cold starts, exhaust leaks, burning exhaust smell, reduced turbo response, loss of performance, a Check Engine Light in some cases, and visible broken exhaust studs

Will this help my turbo spool faster?

Yes. The port-matched runners help improve exhaust gas flow to the turbocharger, allowing the turbo to spool more efficiently than with damaged or warped factory manifolds.

Is there anything else I should replace during installation?

BD Diesel recommends installing the optional additional parts kit (1043002) while replacing the manifolds. Replacing wear items during the repair can make installation easier and help ensure a long-lasting repair.

Can I install these manifolds while replacing my turbo?

Absolutely. Many customers install these manifolds when replacing or upgrading their turbocharger since much of the labor overlaps. Installing upgraded manifolds at the same time can help improve reliability and maximize turbo efficiency.
