WHY DODGE 5.9L CUMMINS 04.5-07 TRANSMISSIONS FAIL AND HOW BD SOLVES IT

The Dodge 48RE is a capable transmission, but the torque from a modified 5.9L Cummins can quickly expose its weaknesses. Common failure points include slipping clutches from low line pressure, torque converter failure, and cracked flexplates. For trucks with significant power adders, the factory input and output shafts also become vulnerable.

  • Slipping Clutches or Overheating

Often caused by low line pressure and a weak torque converter.

    The BD Difference

Our performance valve bodies increase pressure, and our converters use superior clutch material to improve holding power.

  • Cracked or Broken Flexplate

The factory flexplate can crack under the 5.9L Cummins' torque, especially with added power.

    The BD Difference

Our billet steel flexplates are significantly stronger and designed to handle the load.

  • Erratic Shifting or 'Shuttle Shifts'

Can be caused by a failing governor pressure solenoid or transducer.

    The BD Difference

Our Pressure Transducer Upgrade Kits and complete valve bodies are designed to resolve these common electronic failures.

  • Broken Input or Output Shaft

A common failure in high-horsepower trucks, especially during boosted launches or heavy sled pulls.

    The BD Difference

Upgrading to a billet input and output shaft is critical for drivetrain survival.

What's the difference between BD's TowMaster, TorqueMaster, and Roadmaster transmissions?

TowMaster is for stock to moderately powered trucks that tow heavy. TorqueMaster adds components like a billet input shaft for higher horsepower. Roadmaster is our top-tier build for competition use and extreme power levels.

Why do some 48RE parts fit 2005-2007 models only?

In 2005, Dodge replaced the mechanical TV cable with an electronic Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA). This change requires different valve bodies and electronic controls, which is why some parts are specific to 2005+ trucks.

Do I really need a billet flexplate?

The stock flexplate is a known weak point. We strongly recommend installing one of our billet flexplates whenever the transmission is removed, especially on trucks with performance tuning.

I'm rebuilding my 48RE myself. Which Build-It kit should I get?

Our Stage 1 kit is for stock rebuilds. Stages 2 and 3 are for towing and mild performance. Our Stage 4 Master Rebuild Kit includes the most robust components for a full performance build.

Can I get manual shift control for my 48RE automatic?

Yes. Our TapShifter kit includes a valve body and shifter for full manual control. We also offer full manual valve bodies for race applications that eliminate automatic shifting entirely.

What is the APPS Noise Isolator for?

Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) can cause issues with the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS), leading to torque converter clutch cycling. Our noise isolator filters this interference for smoother TCC engagement.
